Bhopal 1984-2014: 30 years after the disaster

30 years ago today, the Union Carbide pesticide plant (now owned by Dow Chemicals) in Bhopal leaked toxic gas across the community in what is considered the worst industrial disaster the world has ever seen.
Death, disease, injustice and the toxic legacy from this tragedy continue today.

NGO Guide to SAICM Updated for the 2nd Open-Ended Working Group

As we approach the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management's (SAICM's) 2nd Open Ended Working Group (OEWG2) meeting, IPEN has updated its 2008 "NGO Guide to SAICM" booklet with a new preface. The new text addresses SAICM developments since the Guide was first released, touches on the wide scope of SAICM, and includes information about lead and pesticide poisoning and emerging toxics issues.

African Lead Paint Elimination Project Launched
Tuesday, 02 December 2014
IPEN launched its African Lead Paint Elimination Campaign with an Inception Meeting held in Dar es Salam, Tanzania in late November. The project involves four African countries – Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast and Tanzania – and is being implemented in partnership with the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which provided $1 million in funding.

IPEN Press Release (Bangkok): The U.S. has led a push at the mercury treaty negotiations in Bangkok to further delay any global action on mercury contaminated sites. The sixth negotiating meeting of the Minamata Convention on Mercury has failed to live up to its title, which references the world’s most infamous mercury contaminated site in Minamata, Japan.
