KATHMANDU: A campaign to eliminate lead-based paints was launched in the Capital today.
The campaign aims at raising widespread awareness among business entrepreneurs, consumers and policy makers about the adverse impacts on human health from lead based decorative paints.
The lead found in all type of paints to speed-up drying increases durability and maintains a fresh appearance, however it is corrosive and can cause health and environmental hazards.
The European Union-funded project is being implemented in seven countries (Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Thailand) with a total EU funding of euro1.4 million over a period of three years for promoting safe chemical policies and practices aimed at protecting human health and environment, according to a press release issued by Delegation of a European Union to Nepal.
In Nepal, the Centre for Public Health and Environmental Development (CEPHED) is implementing the project, which will launch activities geared at eliminating the manufacture, import, sale and use of lead in decorative paints through a widespread awareness raising campaign……
