Dental experts demand banning metal amalgam
Dental experts today demanded phasing out dental amalgam and urged the government to ratify the Minamata Convention on Mercury.
Dental professionals, academicians and environmental activists expressed the concern at a round table titled "Mercury Free Dentistry: Steps toward Alternatives of Mercury Dental Amalgam" at Environment and Social Development Organisation- ESDO office in city's Lalmatia area, said a release.
Professor Dr Ali Asgor Moral, President of Bangladesh Dental Society urged the government to ratify the Minamata Convention on Mercury and suggested the dentists to use alternatives of amalgam.
Former Environment Secretary and ESDO Chairperson Syed Marghub Murshed presided over the consultation and urged the dental society to come forward to build a mercury free environment for healthy and toxic-free future in Bangladesh.
ESDO Secretary General and Vice-president of World Alliance for Mercury Free Dentistry Dr Shahriar Hossain, Engr. Dewan Naquib Ahsan, Additional Chief Engineer Department of Public Health, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Bangladesh Dental College Dr MA Sikder were present among others.
In dentistry, amalgam is a mixture of metal and other metal like mercury used for dental fillings. It commonly consists of mercury 50 percent, silver 22-32 percent, tin 14 percent, copper 8 percent, and other trace metals.
