Countries have ratified the Stockholm Convention, developed National Implementation Plans (NIPs) and received financial support to advance these NIPs. In addition, countries are obliged to report about their efforts to implement the Convention to the Conference of the Parties as well as to relevant donors. To ensure a meaningful impact that reduces/eliminates POPs exposure, NGOs need to participate in and monitor these efforts.
For several years there has been ongoing discussion about setting limit values for the definition of POPs waste, which is waste containing dangerous levels of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). This means determining the levels of POPs in wastes above which the waste is considered to be in certain way hazardous (according to its content of POPs). When we talk about the levels we refer to “Low POPs Content Level.” “LPCL” is the abbreviation used for this term (see Article 6 of the Stockholm Convention).
IPEN’s 2020 Global Meeting & Forum took place in Bishoftu, Ethiopia, from the 6th – 10th of February. More than 100 environmental, health, and human rights leaders from over 50 countries came together to share the work they do locally and globally to ensure a just and healthy future for everyone by eliminating harm to human health and the environment from toxic chemicals.
