IPENers participated in the Ordinary and extraordinary meetings of the conferences of the parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions (the “ExCOP”) that began on 28 April in Geneva, Switzerland. Flame Retardant Banned, Stall on Asbestos and Paraquat

Event on Alternatives to DDT in Malaria Vector Control

30 April, 2013: Pesticide Action Network (PAN) International, Biovision Foundation and IPEN will host a side event on Safe and Effective Alternatives to the Use of DDT in Malaria Vector Control today at lunchtime in Geneva.

Event on E-waste and Recycling Dumping

30 April, 2013: IPEN will host a side event on “Dumping E-waste & Recycling POPs- Are the Conventions Losing Control?” this evening (18:15) in Geneva (CICG building, room 16). The side event will address E-waste and recycling POPs, which are cross-cutting synergies issues relevant to the Stockholm and Basel Conventions. It will:
- Outline the global policy landscape
- Highlight key agenda issues at the Basel and StockholmCOPs
- Provide insights to the issues via a case study in Ethiopia

Event on Chemicals in Children’s Products

28 April, 2013: IPEN will team up with GRID Arendal in hosting a side event on Chemicals in Childrens’ Consumer Products on Wednesday, 1 May in Geneva.

22 April, 2013: In preparation for the upcoming conference, IPEN has released its “Quick Views of the Stockholm Convention’s 6th Conference of the Parties (COP6).” This document contains a summary statement of IPEN views on issues that COP6 will be called upon to address, such as Listing HBCD in Annex A; DDT; Exemptions and their evaluation; and other important topics. Brominated flame retardants
A Public Interest Guide to Toxic Flame Retardant Chemicals

IPEN has updated its guide to toxic flame retardant chemicals to reflect new developments since it was first released in June 2012. The guide is an introduction to the science and industry manipulation of toxic chemicals marketed as flame retardants. These toxic chemicals do not provide fire safety but are widely present in consumer products that release them into dust, polluting people and the environment. They are also present in the millions of tons of electronic waste that is dumped in developing countries each year.

E-Waste
Guide for Conducting E-Waste Inventory in Africa

PAN Ethiopia conducted an e-waste inventory in four cities in Ethiopia using the UNEP Inventory Assessment Manual as a reference to select the appropriate method. This guide was developed based on the Ethiopian experience so that other developing countries facing similar problems can use it and adapt it for their local situation in conducting e-waste inventories, as well as lobby for the formulation of policies to regulate the lifecycle management of e-products in their respective nations.

Guide to the New Mercury Treaty
Tuesday, 9 April 2013 - 12:00pm
The final meeting on the new mercury treaty was held in Geneva in January 2013 and reached agreement on the text of the new treaty. The treaty will be adopted in October 2013 at a diplomatic conference in Japan. IPEN believes that, at minimum, a global treaty on mercury should incorporate provisions that, if taken together and fully implemented, will actually reduce total anthropogenic mercury emissions and releases to the global environment. Heavy Metals

Although IPEN completed some heavy metals-related projects prior, it was in 2009 that IPEN officially launched its Heavy Metals Working Group (HMWG). The HMWG has initially focused on issues pertaining to lead and mercury.
Working with NGOs across the globe, IPEN initiated a “Children's Health First- Eliminate Lead from Paint” campaign. The goals of the campaign are to raise awareness about the health and environmental hazards of paint containing lead, and promote safe alternatives and ultimate phase-out.

E-Products

Originally beginning as an electronic waste (e-waste) working group, IPEN’s E-products Working Group expanded its mission to more fully consider the entire lifecycle of electrical and electronic products (upstream (design), midstream (production and use), and downstream (wastes)) and their relation to green design, worker and consumer health, and wastes.
