Inventory and mapping of mercury use in Artisanal Small Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) sites in Migori, South Western Kenya

The Centre for Environment Justice and Development (CEJAD) conducted a detailed investigation of the extent of mercury use in artisanal small scale gold mining (ASGM) sites in Mikei, Masara and Osiri in Kenya. As part of the investigation, CEJAD conducted a range of interviews and awareness-raising activities with gold miners, their associations and local authorities, related to the hazards of mercury use and alternative, mercury-free gold processing techniques.

Strengthening Mercury Free Health Care Campaign in Nepal through National Level Public Awareness

This project by Center for Public Health and Environmental Development (CEPHED) investigates the extent of mercury pollution in the health care sector of Nepal (including dental institutions and other health care settings) and suggests recommendations to transition to a mercury-free healthcare system. In addition, the project provides data on the status of mercury pollution in Nepal across a range of sectors, including health care products, lighting products and cosmetics.

Public Participation in Conducting Independent Monitoring

This project by NGO Independent Ecological Expertise examines the extensive mercury contamination resulting from decades of operation of the Khaidarkan mercury mine, virtually the last primary mercury mine in the world still producing and exporting elemental mercury. Under difficult conditions and considerable resistance from mine management, IEE has undertaken an independent environmental mercury monitoring study, utilising public participation, to add to the available knowledge of mercury contamination around this industrial hot spot.

Mercury Country Situation Report by Armenian Civil Society Sector

Armenian based NGO Armenian Women for Health and Healthy Environment (AWHHE) undertook a project to produce a Mercury Country Status Report for Armenia. Their investigation into mercury pollution has contributed important information to the national efforts to develop an inventory of mercury pollution sources and contaminated sites which they have been able to share with key stakeholders and the public.

National Public Awareness Activities in Kazakhstan

“Greenwomen” Analytical Environmental Agency conducted a comprehensive awareness raising project on mercury pollution in Kazakhstan. Certain areas of Kazakhstan, such as the River Nura, the city of Temirtau and the Pavlodar chemical complex are heavily impacted by mercury contamination. As part of this activity numerous methods were employed to spread the message about mercury pollution among stakeholders including the public, NGOs, media and government.

Generate public awareness in relation to a chlor-alkali plant, products containing mercury and the use of dental amalgam

This project by Red de Acción en Plaguicidas y sus Alternativas para América Latina (RAP-AL) includes interviews with community members and a former worker from the chlor- alkali plant of EFICE in San José Dept., Río de la Plata. Several interviews were also conducted with decision-makers from the Basel Convention Coordinating Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean Region in the Southern Cone, the National Directorate of Environment (DINAMA), and the Ministry of Housing, Land and Environment (MVOTMA).

Mercury in the Chemical Industry – a Toxic Legacy in the CEE Region

The project investigates the status of mercury pollution in and around industrial facilities in the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region that are intentionally using mercury in their manufacturing processes (such as chlor-alkali plants).

Market Investigation on the Illegal Importation of Mercury-Containing Skin Whitening Creams in the Philippines

The EcoWaste Coalition, an environmental watchdog group promoting chemical safety and zero waste, conducted a market investigation between November 2014 and February 2015 to determine the availability of mercury-containing skin whitening products, particularly facial creams, in the Philippines. EcoWaste Coalition procured 355 samples of skin whitening creams from various retailers in 50 cities across the archipelago and had them analyzed for mercury content using a portable X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) device.

Medical Waste Management and Mercury Devices in Health Sector Assessment and its Alternatives in Bali, Indonesia

As a way of promoting the safe handling of medical waste and mercury-containing equipment, BaliFokus began by assessing the handling of mercury-containing devices and general medical waste management systems in local hospitals. After administering surveys and examining hospital waste management policies, organizers educated hospital staff about the dangers of medical waste incineration and existing alternatives to mercury-containing equipment.
