ACAT: Ninth Circuit Court finds Seward coal export facility violating Clean Water Act

A federal appeals court unanimously ruled that Aurora Energy Services, LLC, and Alaska Railroad Corporation are violating the Clean Water Act by dumping coal pollution into Resurrection Bay from their coal export facility in Seward, Alaska. In its ruling, the Ninth Circuit reversed a prior district court decision that the facility’s storm water permit shielded them from liability for the pollution. The Ninth Circuit found that the terms of that permit prohibit dumping coal into the bay, and the court sent the case back to the district court for further proceedings.

China Chemical Safety Project Underway

IPEN, Chinese and Czech partners have been working on a 2-year, EU-funded project called: "Strengthening the Capacity of Pollution Victims and Civil Society Organizations to Increase Chemical Safety in China.” The Project includes public awareness-raising, resource materials, data generation, and case studies carried out in geographically and functionally diverse areas in three categories: metals, wastes, and chemicals.

IPEN Expert Is “Voice of Reason” on Fracking at Helsinki Chemicals Forum

Dr. Mariann Lloyd-Smith, IPEN senior policy adviser, debated the dangers of fracking chemicals against lawyers from oil and gas giant Halliburton and representatives of the Europe and UK chemical industry at the Helsinki Chemical Forum earlier this year.
The session moderator, from the Organization of Economic and Cooperation Development (OECD), complimented Dr. Lloyd-Smith afterwards, saying, “you are the voice of reason.’”

IPENers Participate in the United Nations' First Environment Assembly

The first United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was held at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, from 23-27 June 2014. More than 1,200 participants, including environment ministers, heads of international organizations, government representatives, civil society representatives and business leaders, attended the Assembly.

Environmental Alliance of Armenian NGOs Petition to Save Lake Sevan

IPEN Participating Organization Armenian Women for Health and Healthy Environment (AWHHE) recently joined with the Eco-Coalition, an environmental alliance of NGOs of Armenia, to send the United Nations Environment Programme a letter asking them to work to influence the Armenian government to reverse the environmentally unsound and dangerous decisions they have made concerning Lake Sevan. The letter was accompanied by a petition (below), which was signed by 100 supporters from more than 35 countries around the world.
