Advocacy and awareness campaign on Mercury

Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ) conducted a multi level campaign to assess sources and exposure to mercury in Sri Lanka, specifically by CFL light bulbs and mercury-based hospital equipment. Importation data on mercury was collected from Sri Lankan Customs and an additional market survey was conducted among the main mercury sellers and buyers in Colombo. Community organizers also tested water in several potentially contaminated sites and tested specific cosmetics for mercury.

Awareness raising in schools on SAICM and chemicals

The NGO Association du Reseau Mediterraneen Pour le Developpement Durable (AREMEDD) organized a series of SAICM-related awareness generating activities throughout Tunisia from February to October 2010. These activities, which included the active participation of local NGOs, involved educating students about the dangers of lead in paint and mercury in used batteries, farmers about the adapting alternatives to pesticides, and representatives from the iron and steel industries about the impact of heavy metals on biodiversity.

Mercury pollution in Azerbaijan

Waste in municipal landfills in six industrial cities was thoroughly analyzed by the NGO Ruzgar to check for mercury contamination. The results of this exploration showed that medical wastes and fluorescent light bulbs containing mercury are mixed in with other waste. In the case of Sumgait landfill, mercury levels were found to exceed relevant standards due to disposal of mercury-containing waste with municipal waste.

National SAICM Forum: Promoting a Civil Society & Government Dialogue on Chemical Safety

Centre for Environmental Justice (CEJ) organized a national workshop to promote and create a dialogue among relevant stakeholders (the public, government officials, media, civil society groups, academics, and other NGO groups) to generate awareness about and promoting the provisions of SAICM in Sri Lanka. A multi-stakeholder meeting on SAICM had not been organized before and this meeting generated a platform for policy makers, researchers and civil society to discuss the present condition of the chemicals circulating in the country.

Monitoring on Advertisements and Distribution of Restricted Pesticide in Indonesia

Continuing their research on highly toxic pesticide use in North Sumatra and Central Java, Gita Pertiwi conducted an overall assessment of the current pesticide situation. This assessment used survey, interview, and observation methods to document the types of pesticides currently in use, how they are used, and the health effects on those using them. In addition, Gita Pertiwi also conducted market research exploring the advertising and selling practices of distributors and local vendors of pesticides.

Participatory Monitoring of banned household pesticides (Diclhorvos & Chlorpyrifos) by Consumers Group in Solo City & Boyolali District

Although in Indonesia the monitoring of pesticide circulation is the responsibility of the local government, trade licenses are issued by the national government, which has led to the weakening of supervision of pesticides and violations of bans and restrictions. In this project, Gita Pertiwi aimed to determine the extent of circulation and trade of two banned household pesticides, Dichlorvos and Chlorpyrifos, by visiting shops and dealers in Solo city and Boyolali district.

Analysis of electrical and electronic equipment waste management system in the Republic of Kazakhstan

The Center "Cooperation for Sustainable Development" produced a novel and comprehensive report on electronic and electric equipment (EEE) waste disposal in Kazakhstan. In this project, organizers began their work via exhaustive data gathering of existing legislation that helped them pinpoint relevant stakeholders they should target.

E-Waste Education for the Next Generation

Environment and Social Development Organization (ESDO) produced and facilitated educational workshops at four schools targeting school children in an effort to draw awareness to the environmental and human health impacts of electronic waste (e-waste) disposal in the community. Dubbed “E-waste Education for the Generation”, the program featured lectures and interactive activities, including the presentation of an animated short produced by Indian NGO Toxics Link. In addition, educational materials were also created and disseminated to the 100 children in attendance.

Heavy metals in fish products

In order to understand the contamination from heavy metals in Moldovan fish (imported and domestic) ECOTOX analyzed fish bought in local markets and fish farms, identified the supply chain of imported fish, summarized data from previous sampling projects, organized a round table with local fish farmers, and disseminated information found from their work through TV media. These efforts produced a wealth of data on the levels of heavy metals found in many species of fish.

Preparation of the assessment report and conducting awareness raising activities on E-waste and batteries management in Belarus

CES conducted an assessment of the situation on e-waste and battery management in Belarus, and completed a report. The report, geared towards govrnment officials, contains relevant information about import and production, major ways of consumption, life time, the present situation with end-of-life products and options for utilization, relevant applicable legislation, and recommendations for further actions (including extended producer responsibility) in this area. After the report was prepared, a press-conference was organized.

Assessment of the Socio-Economic Impact and Human Rights Aspect of Mercury Use in Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining Hotspots in Indonesia

Balifokus conducted extensive qualitative and quantitative methods research to holistically document the process of Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) activities in Indonesia. Specifically focused on ASGM practices in the context of mercury pollution and contamination, Balfokus activists used field interviews, direct observation, and document review to bring to light the many socio-economic and human rights impacts and abuses resulting from this method of gold extraction.

Current Status of Mercury in Jordan

Baytuna Society conducted a number of activities to properly understand the current situation and dangers associated with mercury contamination in Jordan. These activities included a review of all legislation governing mercury, literature review of all research studies conducted in the country, informational interviews with government officials, and the staging of events targeting relevant stakeholders to ascertain levels of understanding about the issue.

Fostering Importance of Chemical and Product Safety in Local Communities

In this project, Resource Centre Leskovac sought to understand the level of community knowledge about toxic chemicals in toys, and also tested specific toys for toxic ingredients. Research was therefore done with 150 health workers/parents (with children from 2 -12 years of age) in health institutions in four local communities to determine their awareness. Next, four groups of toys, divided by materials (metal, plastic, wood and rubber) were tested for heavy metals, phthalates and formaldehyde chemicals.

Medical Waste Management and Mercury Devices in Health Sector Assessment and its Alternatives in Bali, Indonesia

As a way of promoting the safe handling of medical waste and mercury-containing equipment, BaliFokus began by assessing the handling of mercury-containing devices and general medical waste management systems in local hospitals. After administering surveys and examining hospital waste management policies, organizers educated hospital staff about the dangers of medical waste incineration and existing alternatives to mercury-containing equipment.

National Action Plan for Khaidarkan mercury mining: Strengthening Environmental Policy and Implementing Outreach Campaign in Kyrgyzstan

The NGO “Independent Ecological Expertise” conducted activities in order to develop a National Action Plan for the Khaidarkan mercury mine, with the goal to reduce mercury contamination of the environment and human health.

The future of IPM in Croatia

Institut za ruralni razvoj i ekologiju (IRRE) held a public seminar and produced an 8-page booklet to help Croatia’s agricultural stakeholders move towards complying with a recent national law mandating the practice of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Through this seminar and accompanying booklet, farmers and other relevant stakeholders were educated about the tenets of IPM including fertilization and plant stress, crop rotation, soil health, and pesticide waste management.

Mercury-Free Health Care Systems in Gujarat

In order to introduce the issue of mercury in the health care sector in the region, Paryvaraniya Vikas Kendra (PVK), in association with Toxics Link and the State Pollution Control Board of Gujarat, organized a series of awareness-raising workshops. The workshops focused on occupational health hazards of mercury, roles and responsibilities of important stakeholders, mercury phase-out plans and challenges, and mercury policies and the global initiative.

Strengthening information to civil society to protect health from mercury exposure with a focus on vulnerable populations

Through background literature and policy research, as well as extensive interaction and outreach with various regional level stakeholders, Asociación Argentina de Médicos por el Medio Ambiente (AAMMA) produced a comprehensive report about the situation of domestic mercury management. In addition, AAMMA prepared 18 flyers to accompany the document, to facilitate the dissemination of the concepts among the different actors involved.
