Waste incineration and handling in Moldova.
This activity informed citizens on the adverse health and environmental impacts of incineration of different types of waste and performed surveys of waste handling practices. The activity monitored waste incineration sites in ten settlements of the country, including waste dumps, greenhouses, limekilns, cement plants, brick production facilities, used tires, plastic and cardboard. A subsequent roundtable discussion of the results with NGOs, government officials and university professors recommended avoiding incineration of collected obsolete pesticides at the territory of the country, to abandon the practice of burning used tires as fuel (including their burning as fuel at the Rezina Cement Plant), to avoid use of incineration for processing of several hundred tons of paraformaldehyde, and to design and construct waste-processing plant in Chisinau without a waste incineration technological line. In almost all settlements under survey, cases of burning of agricultural residues were registered, relevant administrative protocols were filed and violators paid damages. In some settlements (Belts, Streshen), individual business facilities were established to collect plastic waste and used tires.
