EDEN Centre explored the labelling of hazardous chemicals (sodium nitrite, potassium bromate, artificial coloring) found in food products in some areas of Albania in 2010. With this information, a sample of consumers was surveyed to assess thier understanding of the information about these chemicals and whether they thought that labelling of products was necessary. The majority of consumers reported not having any information on chemicals in their food products or not understanding it. Following this assessment, a joint meeting with the National Food Authority and the Office of Consumer Protection was organized. These government bodies agreed to begin closer inspection of labeling in foods and to create an action plan to inform the public and begin enforcement of existing labelling law.
