Country situation report on POPs in Ghana.
The Environment Youth Action Network (EYAN), in collaboration with Integrated Community Network (ICC), conducted an independent national POPs inventory to reflect the POPs situation in Ghana. The activity covered the 12 POPs banned under the Stockholm Convention and the newly proposed candidate POPs currently being examined by the POPs Review Committee. The study documented organochlorine pesticide incidents, sources of unintentionally produced POPs, and sources of PCBs among others. Contaminated sites and misuse of POPs chemicals were also investigated. The NGOs recommended that stakeholder institutions including NGOs, government, private sector, industries, and research institutions make an effort to develop a national policy to tackle the issue of POPs contamination. Through the activity, NGO participation in the Stockholm Convention issues has increased, and other NGOs have expressed their interest in future POPs activities.
