Petkim Petrochemical Co. PVC Plant.
Since 1985, Petkim Petrochemical Co. has been the major producer of PVC products in Turkey. The firm has also been the main source of chlorine emissions from the beginning of its history of production in 1965 and constitutes one of the most important POPs hotspots of Turkey. The aim of this project was to reveal information on POPs and other toxic substances generated in the process of manufacturing PVC and the effects of these chemicals on environment and human health. The study lists dioxins, furans and an extensive list of organochlorine pollutants identified in environmental and waste samples from the site and vicinity of the plant. The report also describes the toxic substances and additives used in the manufacturing process including vinyl chloride, 1,2-dichloroethane, chlorinated parrafins, lead, cadmium and mercury. Report results were disseminated to the public and Ministry of Environment.
