In this project, Association pour la Défense de l’Environnement et des Consommateurs (ADEC) carried out a number of different activities in order to raise awareness about the sound management of waste in Rufisque and the district of Médina in Senegal. Some of the activities included discussions and brainstorming sessions with targeted groups in schools, quarter associations, women’s associations, and municipalities; communication about the project to local media; the set-up of "ecoquarters," and a pilot demonstration of muncipal solid waste upstream management (waste sorting at the source). In practical terms, this project contributed to increased knowledge about, amongst other items, the toxicity of batteries and caustic soda (used as an ingredient for dyeing), which users generally disposed of anywhere in the quarters; on the soil, and within children’s reach. At the conclusion of this project, people living in the area are better equipped with dialogue and action frameworks for a participative management of local wastes.
